You all know the story of Cinderella…
The kingdom needs an heir and Princess Charmaine is quite aware that the job rests solely upon her shoulders. When her elder sister dies, Charmaine has to take her place at the ball designed to find her a husband. The problem is, she doesn’t want to choose between a hundred eligible bachelors. She just wants to live her life in peace and find love in her own time.
Cynder knows about the impending war between the people of magic and those of his masters, but working as an underpaid servant in the palace kitchens leaves him with little power to do anything about it. On one hand, he’s a staunch supporter of equal rights for his own kind, but he can’t deny the attraction he feels for the daughter of the king and queen he works for.
When the two meet, sparks fly and not just the magical kind…
Charm is the first in the Reverse Fairytale series by USA Today bestselling author J.A.Armitage. Take everything you think you know about fairytales and turn it on its head.

Secrets. Everyone has them, no one wants them to be known. Though it seems like a teenage girl thing, everyone has dealings with secrets and blackmail. When exactly does a secret become juicy enough that it can be used as blackmail? I'm going to break this down into a few categories of young to old:
Children
- Stealing a toy
- Disobeying an adult
- Pushing someone
- Raiding the cookie jar
- Not doing a chore
For young ones, being caught in the act is a big deal. I'm sure we've all heard/experienced the classic "I'm telling" situation where another kid threatens to tell an adult, and the one caught begs them not to, likely saying something along the lines of "I'll do anything", which is always grounds for trouble.
Teenagers/Young Adults
- Crushes/relationships
- Cheating in tests
- School pranks
- Drug/alcohol use
- Private text conversations
Everyone older than these categories certainly thinks these matters are childish and trivial, but to those in these stages of live, they aren't. For many teens, reputation is everything. Katharine McGee takes advantage of this and puts her spin on it with the thousand floor tower; people with high status live on higher floors. She doesn't forget about blackmail though, so some relationships on the upper floors are a careful balance of secret atop secret.
Adults
- Adultery
- Gambling
- Illegal trade
- Illegitimate children
- Credit card usage
There are a lot of tv shows which cover these topics. It's always a great source of entertainment, blackmail and secrets. But should it really be so?
Laughing at the expense of others
Children are taught early on not to laugh at others. Blackmailing is a form of that, isn't it? The blackmailer is mocking a secret, making it a trivial matter when in the other's mind, it is their world.
Of course, bad people always do as they please. Secrets make a story more interesting so I don't fault authors and screenwriters for utilising this.
What do you think about secrets? What's the best way to deal with blackmail?

Why will people do anything to ensure their secrets remain unknown?
When you feel threatened, it seems more intelligent to stop changes from happening rather than controlling them. Wouldn't it be more sensible to remove the power someone holds over you? If you reveal the secret on your own terms, they no longer hold power over you. What do you think about secrets? What's the best way to deal with blackmail?

EXCERPT:
A soft mist hovered over the moonlit lake, beckoning, luring him forward with the seductive enticement of a mermaid’s song. Rhythmic clatter of a distant train moaned in harmony with a symphony of cricket chirps and croaking frogs. Spellbound, Nick Cramer took a long breath and waded deeper into the murky cove. Dank air, laden with a scent of soggy earth and pine, crawled across his bare arms. The hairs on the back of his neck bristled, shooting a prickle down his spine that slithered into an icy pool coiled in the pit of his stomach. He clenched his fingers into a tight fist, determined to fight through the emotion consuming him. Fear sliced through his belly like icy shards until he finally heaved, forcing rancid bile to choke into his throat.I have to do this––he inched forward––only a few more steps and––
A sudden surge swirled around him, yanking him into a whirling vortex, where a violent blue streak dragged him deeper, deeper beneath the lake into the shadowy depths. Heart pounding, he battled against the force, twisting, thrusting toward the surface with all of his strength but, despite his muscular build, he spun like a feather in wind into oblivion. When the mist dissolved, Nick Cramer had vanished.

The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee
Publisher: HarperCollins
Goodreads Summary: New York City, 2118. A glittering vision of the future, where anything is possible – if you want it enough.
Manhattan is home to a thousand-story supertower, a beacon of futuristic glamour and high-tech luxury… and to millions of people living scandalous, secretive lives.
Leda is haunted by nightmares of what happened on the worst night of her life. She’s afraid the truth will get out – which is why she hires Watt, her very own hacker, to keep an eye on all of the witnesses for her. But what happens when their business relationship turns personal?
When Rylin receives a scholarship to an elite upper-floor school, her life transforms overnight. But being here also means seeing the boy she loves: the one whose heart she broke, and who broke hers in return.
Avery is grappling with the reality of her forbidden romance – is there anywhere in the world that’s safe for them to be together?
And then there’s Calliope, the mysterious, bohemian beauty who’s arrived in New York with a devious goal in mind – and too many secrets to count.
Here in the Tower, no one is safe – because someone is watching their every move, someone with revenge in mind. After all, in a world of such dazzling heights, you’re always only one step away from a devastating fall….
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Review: Leda, Avery and Rylin are still reeling over the aftermath of that night. Haunted by nightmares and regrets, they all tread a dangerous line, for eventually the truth will come out. A new arrival in the tower may not seem like much of a deal for the girls, but Calliope Brown is dressed to kill. Ready to wreak a havoc, her devious plans may just undermine them all and crown her the new queen of New York...
There's so much character growth in this book, I love it. Leda has many harsh challenges to face, and the realisations she makes will help her become a better, much improved version of herself; Avery may have everything, but it isn't going to last with the ghosts haunting her; and Rylin is thrust into a new world which will make or break her. There is certainly no shortage of drama in this sequel told from the perspectives of Leda, Avery, Rylin, Watt, and Calliope.
The issues covered in The Dazzling Heights are mostly the same as in The Thousandth Floor, which means it does get a bit boring with the lack of new conflict. Certain characters and events were downplayed. Making them a larger part of the novel could've induced more excitement. On a positive note, I enjoyed getting to know Rylin, who did have a bigger part to play.
If you love teen fiction, you don't want to miss this series. The Dazzling heights builds on the layers created in The Thousandth floor and adds more juicy secrets to the tantalising list of lies. New characters, new stories, new dilemmas. Who will end up on top of this deadly tower?

Foreword: This is by far the most personal post I've ever written here, to date. I'm not sure how popular these discussion posts will be, but it would mean so much to me if people read and commented on them. I guess they're not all going to be bookish, but most probably will. I really hope you enjoy reading them.
I wrote this post awhile back, so I don't feel like this most of the time. Perhaps this is more a work of fiction. But it's something I'd like you to read, and your opinions would mean a lot.
Sometimes I lie awake, thinking. Wishing. I want someone who will understand me, love me for who I am, not who they want me to be. Someone who will listen to everything I tell them with an open heart, hold me when I'm crying, comfort me when I'm hurt. Someone who will fight for me if necessary, protect me from all that wish me harm. Sometimes I even cry myself to sleep just thinking about how nice it would be to have that person in my life right now. Someone I could love, a reason to live.
I need that reason.
I need that someone to lie next to, that someone who will wrap their arms around me protectively and keep me warm when it's cold outside. That someone who will whisper words of comfort into my ear in times of need, give me their best advice, cheer me on from within me. Someone who is deeply connected to me, attuned to my mind, body and senses.
That connection will keep me alive.
Without that person, I will slowly wither and retreat. I'll lose my youth and shrink back to the sidelines. I'll shiver when it's cold, break into pieces when I'm hurt. I'll eventually just burn out and die like a candle left with no more wax to burn.
Please, I'm begging you. Save me.
Others may think it is a selfish need, yet it isn't. I'd do anything for you, brave all the endless storms. They say I love to create drama, but really it's the only way I can survive for a little bit without you, like a small piece of wood fueling a fire. Yes, I need you, but you need me too. You may not realise it yet, but you're a life saver. You can't live without saving my life, and I can't live without you. I've barely survived without you here, and I've hardly lived.
Make me laugh everyday, let me live.
Only with you can I ruly do as they say, live life to the fullest. You're the only way I'll survive. I've barely managed to drag myself along in those dark times when you weren't here, and I felt like giving up many times as well. I never used to know it, but I certainly know it now; you're the missing puzzle piece, the vital one I've always been missing, always desired. Without you, I was never complete, ever.
Complete me; by my saviour.
This post sings to me. I may no longer feel so negative, but it screams about a young girl who is lost and can't find her way. She's finally found her light, but she doesn't know it.

A common series length in YA fiction is three books, more commonly known as a trilogy. Many reviewers seem to have an issue with the three book set up, and often you hear the middle book criticised. This is such a common ordeal that there's even a name for this "condition", which varies from reviewer to reviewer but I call it middle-book-itis, though there are many other names such as middle book syndrome.
So I'm here to ask you guys what you think about trilogies. Below I've compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages of trilogies:
Advantages
- longer than a duology or standalone
- not too long or short
- enough time for character development
- three books allow for a book of introduction, development/climax, and resolution
- you get used to most series being this length
Disadvantages
- too short (leaves you wanting more)
- too long (not enough plot)
- could have middle-book-itis
- feels like a stand-alone/duology extended in an attempt to earn more money
- the whole thing could've been shortened into one more effective novel
As you can see, a lot of the advantages are disadvantages are just opposites of each other, depending on your preferences. And for this reason, I think it really depends on the reader and the series. For some books, I find that a trilogy is the perfect length for the story, but others fit it less.
What do you think about trilogies? Are they too long/short?

To be thrust into an intense physical training program described as special, exclusive and worst of all–top-secret. She signed up for tuition assistance, not to be held in a secret government facility for boot camp…

The upside? One of her new teammates is the cutest boy ever. Watching Finn hit the gym wearing a tank top doesn’t suck–although sometimes his brooding attitude does. Beware: The Division isn’t something you just walk away from. You better run.
Riley realizes her capabilities and strengths are greater than she’d ever imagined. But she also learns she wasn’t just chosen for this special program…
She was made for it.

INTERVIEW WITH LEIGH WALKER
Q: Wow, you’re interviewing yourself…how pompous!Right? It’s to tell people more about the series, lol. Although I should admit that I normally talk to myself a lot, so this isn’t much of a departure.
Q: Tell us about “The Division” – it’s a bunch of teenagers with psychic powers, right? How did you get inspired?
Everyone on the team has psychic powers, yes. I was watching “Stranger Things” on Netflix and I WAS SO PSYCHED they were testing poor Eleven for psychic powers. But I was also like, YEEHAW! Because I LOVE psychic powers, and I can’t remember the last time I saw or read something that included them. I’ve always been obsessed by the concept, and there’s so many variations of powers, so many incarnations it can take… Anyway, after watching that show and having that reaction, I thought, other people must love this stuff, too, I can’t be the only one. So I wanted to give us all more!
Q: Tell us about the main character, Riley Payne.
Riley is a ‘normal’ girl dealing with a lot. Her father and sister died in a car accident and her mother started drinking heavily after it happened. She just wants to get out of her house and go to boarding school, but she gets more than she bargained for when she abruptly gets recruited into a secret agency…
Q: The ‘secret agency’ is The Division, correct?
Yes. It’s a secret cell of teenagers who were genetically engineered with psychic gifts. They work for the American government to combat domestic terrorism.
Riley thinks they’re nuts, of course. Until she unlocks her powers, then she’s blown away by what she can do.
Q: As the series goes on, you get into genetic engineering, fated love, eco-terrorism, loyalty, isolation, human nature, climate change…some pretty heavy themes. But would you describe the series as a difficult read?
I don’t think so, but certainly some parts were hard to write – like about Riley missing her dad and her sister. I still cry when I read those parts. And in the second book, an eco-terrorist is introduced, and some terrible things happen in the book. So yeah, there’s definitely a heaviness to some of what the characters are dealing with. But they’re teenagers, and their youth is sort of a tonic against everything they’re dealing with. They still care about their friends. They still want to hang out, tell stories, joke around. They are still very interested in falling in love. I think my writing style is naturally light and breezy, so it’s sort of a counterpoint to the storyline. If that makes sense, lol.
Q: What’s your favorite part of this series?
Riley and Finn’s relationship. They have so much on their plates, and they’re so young, but they genuinely care for each other in a way that makes me ache.
Q: What do you do when you’re not writing?
I have three large, unruly boys who like to play every sport and eat as much food as possible. When I’m not at my computer, I’m busy carting them around and grocery shopping. But I also love to relax with a great book or television show – I am currently completely obsessed with Riverdale, OMG!!!
Thanks for having me! Happy reading!!!

Dear Mr M by Herman Koch (Translated by Sam Garrett)
Publisher: Text Publishing
Goodreads Summary: A hair-raising new tour de force from Herman Koch, New York Times bestselling author of The Dinner and Summer House with Swimming Pool.
Once a celebrated writer, M’s greatest success came with a suspense novel based on a real-life, unsolved disappearance. It told the story of a history teacher who went missing one winter after his brief affair with a stunning pupil. Upon publication, M’s novel was a bestseller, one that marked his international breakthrough.
That was years ago, and now M’s career is almost over as he fades increasingly into obscurity. But not when it comes to his bizarre, seemingly timid neighbour who keeps a close eye on him. Why?
From various perspectives, Herman Koch tells the dark tale of a writer in decline, a teenage couple in love, a missing teacher, and a single book that entwines all of their fates. Thanks to M’s novel, supposedly a work of fiction, everyone seems to be linked forever, until something unexpected spins the “story” off its rails.
With racing tension, sardonic wit, and a world-renowned sharp eye for human failings, Herman Koch once again spares nothing and no one in his gripping new novel, a barbed thriller suspending readers in the mysterious literary grey space between fact and fiction.
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Review: Mr M is a writer whose sales are slowly dwindling. He still remembers the days when he wrote Payback and it was a massive hit. Laura and Herman are just two teenagers having a fun time when their lives are ruined by a missing history teacher. Forty years has passed since then, and while he may be slowly fading away, someone is still extremely interested in Mr M.
It takes awhile for us readers to realise what the point of the book is. The first part is observing Mr M from an unknown perspective, which can be confusing but will make sense later on. I especially enjoyed "Life Before Death", a recount of teenage years; it showcased the characters' backstory through memories and answered many questions.
A house some friends go to during their break, some funny films which aren't so innocent... There's a lot of teenage drama in Dear Mr M, but it's paired and mixed in with adult drama for extra effect and worth. Paragraph by paragraph, Herman Koch unveils this massive, detailed portrait. Questions are asked in a futile attempt to understand; for no explanations will be given until the end of the book.
There are some really vindictive characters here, but they all serve a purpose. Mr M, for example, is extremely opinionated in ways which would horrify the world if they knew. These characters have masterfully crafted personas, designed to be disliked. While I definitely despise them, I have to admit they add to the story a great deal and are invaluable to the plot.
Herman Koch has created an interesting type of book with Dear Mr M, a tale of rights and wrongs written in an unusual format. A few of our main characters get no perspective, and one gets a say but then disappears from the book. Fans of mystery novels and adult affairs are sure to love this book.

*contains potential Tower of Dawn plot and relationship spoilers, read on with care*
Hi everyone! As you may know, I posted a soundtrack with my review of Tower of Dawn by Sarah J Maas. I took particular care with this soundtrack, making sure each song was in the chronological order which made sense by my calculations. But for this post, I'm including the soundtrack (again) at the bottom of the post, but firstly my explanation for why I chose these songs, and what they mean.
Slow Hands - Niall Horan
Well, after that moment described above, a lot happens, does it not? So this song is dedicated to how Chaol feels about Yrene.
This Is What It Takes - Shawn Mendes
When Chaol is injured again... Totally support SJM's move with this one, but this song for when Yrene brings him back.
Friends - Justin Bieber ft. BloodPop®

But for this post, I'm including the soundtrack (again) at the bottom of the post, but firstly my explanation for why I chose these songs, and what they mean.
Lonely Together - Avicii ft. Rita Ora
At the start of the book, Chaol and Nesryn are stuck together. While both may be fine with this idea, I believe this song describes quite well how they feel.

Wings - Birdy
Upon Sartaq's entrance into the book, Nesryn is intrigued by him. It's clear that he is fascinated by her, and while he doesn't get a perspective, Wings fits his thoughts at this point especially as he has Kadara, who can fly.

Small Doses - Bebe Rexha
While this song is about love, I think the basic ideals of it still fit how Yrene feels about Chaol at the start of this book. Why? Because Adarlan is the place of her nightmares, and she sees all her childhood horrors in Chaol. "I can only take you in small doses" because too long in his company will pain her.

Take Your Time - Sam Hunt
Chaol is immediately intrigued by Yrene, but expects nothing of her. As she returns after their initial meeting, I believe he wants to get to know her more than anything even as she pushes for him to reveal what he feels inside.

Scared To Be Lonely - Martin Garrix ft. Dua Lipa
This song reminds me of the moment where Chaol and Nesryn talk until they fall asleep. Nesryn knows that he is talking to her out of guilt, having promised her an adventure, but the lyrics of the song describe them well.
Back To December - Taylor Swift
Listening to Taylor Swift reminds me of the old her, but also maybe Nesryn. Perhaps not "back to December" but back to when Chaol and Nesryn were good together, before they started the "adventure".

I'll Be Good - Jaymes Young
I really think that this song is perfect for Chaol. With all his self loathing, this would be a moment where he is reflecting on his life and promising to do better.
Am I Wrong - Nico & Vinz
Yrene thinking about whether or not she's wrong about everyone in Adarlan based on her past experiences. It would fit for the moment when she first starts to fall in love with Chaol but is conflicted.

Yrene thinking about whether or not she's wrong about everyone in Adarlan based on her past experiences. It would fit for the moment when she first starts to fall in love with Chaol but is conflicted.
Too Good At Goodbyes - Sam Smith
Chaol on Yrene as a healer, when he refuses to let her in. Or, refuses to allow himself to think about loving her.

Gone - Bebe Rexha
Nesryn as she contemplates Chaol's guilt that last night before she leaves.
What About Us - P!nk
When Chaol is really distant from Yrene due to Nesryn's note.

Tell Me You Love Me - Demi Lovato
Sartaq, as he lies there in front of Nesryn, dying. While I don't particularly like the feel of this song, I reckon the lyrics fit quite well. This is one of my favourite moments of the book.
Hard To Love - Calvin Harris ft. Jessie Reyez
Hasar, tricked by Yrene, hosting Yrene's birthday party. When she says "I know I am not easy to love" and Yrene almost feels guilty for her manipulation.

Nesryn to Sartaq when he recovers. They really are my favourites!
2U - David Guetta ft. Justin Bieber
2U - David Guetta ft. Justin Bieber
Sartaq and Nesryn (I mean, I feel bad because most of this playlist has been Chaol and Yrene, Chaol and Nesryn. But I love Sartaq and Nesryn more?)
Dusk Till Dawn - ZAYN ft. Sia
Yrene and Chaol (when they FINALLY admit they like each other and just get over it)

You know that scene where Kashin is happy for Yrene? Sad, but he says he misses their friendship. This song to describe it, hands down.
Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart - Ariana Grande
Everyone, everything at the end of the book!
So I hope you enjoyed my explanations! These have been sitting at the back of my mind so I had to write it out in full. Stay tuned, because there will certainly be more Tower of Dawn inspired posts coming up!

Note: this discussion contains mention of information about Antica revealed in Tower of Dawn by Sarah J Maas. If you don't mind that, read on.
Yay, another post! This time, I'm delving into something which is discussed in books and media; heirs to a kingdom. The traditional way is that the eldest son succeeds the throne, and a daughter will become heir only if all her brothers die or she has none, as in the case of Queen Elizabeth II of England.
It seems to be becoming more popular in literature for the king/queen to choose an heir rather than for it to be a birthright. I think this is a much better way of succession especially as the ruler can choose an heir. Of course, it also presents some problems, such as if an evil ruler happens to inherit the throne they can just keep passing it down to evil heirs.
What are your thoughts on heirs and succession? Which of these ways do you think is the best, or can you think of a better way? Leave your thoughts below.

Excerpt:
Ramus stared blankly at the prostitute’s beckoning hand. The girl flexed her fingers, as though trying to conjure money from his pockets.
“I’ll do anything you ask if the price is right.”
Valkyrie reached across Ramus and pushed the girl’s hand away, saying, “He’s not interested, thank you.”
The girl narrowed her eyes. “I think he can answer for himself, honey.”
“And his answer is no, sweetie.”
Indignant, the girl turned her attention back to Ramus. “Listen, if you want to hire me you have to leave these three out of it.” She gestured to Valkyrie, Remiel, and me, her nose wrinkled. “There’s a place down on Furnace Street we can use for the night. Real cheap—I know the owner.”
Ramus wasn’t listening—his eyes were fixed on the rearview mirror. A gunshot ripped through the air. Remiel squealed and grabbed my arm again.
Ramus turned the key, and the cab sputtered back to life. “Time to go!”
“What was that?!” the prostitute shrieked.
Valkyrie reached over Ramus, grabbed the girl by the arms, and yanked her through the open window. She was just thin enough to fit, and she landed unceremoniously on Ramus’s lap. Her knee crashed into his groin, and he let out a pained yelp. Valkyrie pulled her again so she was sprawled on his lap instead.
“What are you doing!?” she howled as Ramus jammed his foot on the gas.
“It’s called saving your life, and you’re welcome!” Valkyrie snapped.
The girl let loose a series of vulgar curses as Valkyrie shoved her into the backseat between Remiel and me. The sickening scent of flowery perfume and smoke assaulted my nose. “Let me out of here!” she yelled.
“So you can get shot? No chance!” Valkyrie fired back, though he added in a low, irritated growl, “But it’s very tempting…”
“It was probably just a car backfire!” She reached over me, groping for the door handle. I was too stunned to stop her, even though I would be the one in danger of falling out of the cab if she succeeded.
Another gunshot rang out somewhere behind us. The girl screamed and jerked back into her seat.
“Drive faster!” she ordered.
We rocketed off into the murky evening. The girl dug her fingernails into my arm—much sharper than Remiel’s—but I was too scared to ask her to release me.

What shall I write about today? I pondered as I realised it was time for another discussion. I don't remember exactly when I came up with this topic, but likely in class sometime when someone made an obnoxious, uneducated comment. Anyway, it gave me this thought: are non-readers less intelligent?
As much as I love the idea of this being a thing, I don't think it is. Reading definitely makes you smarter, as Curiosity outlines in this article, but that doesn't mean that people who don't read are stupid. I know many people who don't read on a regular basis but still excel at school.
However, what I do think is true, is that not having the ability to read fluently stops you from learning. You all know that person who really sucks at reading out loud, stumbling over words, but they speak perfectly fine, right?Okay, maybe it's just me. But still.
Do you think not reading hinders advances in your intelligence?

The Irish Getaway (The Kennedy Boys #3.5) by Siobhan Davis
Goodreads Summary: The Kennedy Boys go wild on vacation in Ireland!
It’s the summer before they start college, and Faye and Ky are visiting her home turf together—it’s Ky’s first time in Ireland, and her first trip home since her parent’s tragic death.
After a blissful three weeks on their own, they welcome the rest of the Kennedy clan when they arrive on Irish soil for the vacation of a lifetime.
Watch the sparks fly as family emotions run high and the Kennedy boys’ party up a storm, creating mayhem and madness wherever they go.
This dual POV short novel should only be read after Keeping Kyler.
Rating: 5 Stars
Review: Wow! The Irish Getaway really fills in the gap between Keeping Kyler and Loving Kalvin. All our favourite characters are featured in this novella about the family vacation in Ireland. While this isn't a compulsory read, I'd still recommend that you do because the events occurring in this story are the predecessors of problems which happen later in the series.
Narrated from the dual perspectives of Faye and Kyler, the two varying opinions give the story so much more depth. While I sometimes forgot whose perspective I was reading from due to being interrupted in the middle of a chapter, I figured it out soon enough and this didn't take away from my enjoyment of the tale.
A wonderful narrative which brings you back to the world of the Kennedys, all fans of The Kennedy Boys series should read this because of the drama and exciting events which are present throughout the entire novella. Siobhan Davis brings us another great, masterfully crafted tale with a lot of meaning below the surface.
