Review: Talon by Julie Kagawa

Talon (Talon #1) by Julie Kagawa
Publisher: Harlequin TEEN
Goodreads Summary: Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.
Rating: 5 Stars
Review: Stunning. Another amazing novel by Julie Kagawa, who has hatched a new fantasy world, Talon. Ember Hill is sent to Cresent beach to study and blend in with the humans. But she meets a rogue dragon- someone who has defied Talon, and escaped, to be hunted by the Vipers, Talon's elite assassins till their death. Ember earns the truth, which is horrifying. But then comes Garrett, the St George soldier sent to hunt her down and kill her. Torn between going rogue, leaving Dante, her twin behind, or staying and risking punishment, Ember's life becomes very unpleasant and full of unwanted choices she never had. Julie Kagawa has create another, masterpiece of writing. Extremely addictive. You won't be able to put it down. Julie Kagawa is definitely one of the best.

I grew up on a farm in Ohio, but that's not very interesting, is it? When I'm not writing you can find me doing one of two things; getting lost on highways or getting lost in the lives of fictional characters. If my heart had two feet, one foot would be in romance and the other solidly in geekdom. I hope you'll all follow me on my journey through this carnival they call life.I promise there will be a happy ending.

Excerpt: A song begins, and it only takes a few strokes of her guitar before I realize what she’s playing—my favorite song since I was a child. The woman in the back belts out Wild Horses with the power of a Kelly Clarkson clone. The way she twists with the melody is haunting, a complete display of emotional battery. With her words, she beats the fuck out of my fragile soul, leaving wounds and bruises so dark, so blue, that anyone can see. Noah sees. He sees right through me and the space between us shatters. Our walls come down and he stares into my eyes. I catch a glimpse of who we used to be before the world set out on its campaign to destroy us. His palm grazes over my shoulder before landing on my back. “Come dance with me.” I don’t say anything, but respond by sliding off my stool and landing on my feet. I let him take the lead as he slowly draws me out to the center of the dance floor. The floor is vacant with nothing standing between us and the songbird—and she soars to new heights, further damaging my fragile emotional state. Noah takes my left hand into his right and wraps his left hand around my hip. We begin to circle each other, our feet directing where we go. “I’ve missed you, Faith.” I want to lie to him and say that I don’t feel the same way because things are a whole lot easier that way. But I can’t lie, not right now. Not when he’s holding me like this. “I missed you, too.” “I’m sorry for earlier.” He runs his face over his shoulder. “I know I can come off bitter and angry.” “You think?” I ask deadpan. “I know.” I lean my head against his shoulder, and it’s a much-needed rest. I could fall asleep like this, all the while my feet continuing to dance in a circle. “Do you ever wish we could go back and change things?” “Every second of every day.” I let out a light chuckle that is muffled against the fabric of his shirt. “Our past defines us, Noah. Everyone says it shouldn’t, somberly, ” I say “but it does, and I’m running on empty here...”

Rutherford Pierce is on the brink of becoming the most powerful man in the world, and if he does, no one will be safe. Review:  Brilliant. Gordon Korman adds a new twist to the unstoppable series. With so many losses and casualties, Amy and Dan barely survive. But in the ends, the Cahills will truimph. With the help of April May, they save the world in a spectacular way. Amazing.

Title: The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds #1)
Author: Alexandra Bracken

Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Synopsis:

I’m Luna, and I’ve been in the Twilight Zone since I moved in with my sister and her boyfriend.
I sense their secrets in every corner of the house.
Gabriel is eerily beautiful, and his personality disturbingly perfect, while Gaia’s inexplicable PTSD and mood swings bounce her between bliss and despair.
Until Gabriel’s brothers pay a visit.
Cassiel…
He’s the night to his brother’s day. He’s sex personified and the devil in one hell of a stunning package. It’s been years since I last saw him, but this man makes me burn. He hooks me with his touch. Enthralls me with those oddly simmering eyes. He pierces my soul with his knowing smirks, and I am losing myself in him.
Ka…
With pearlescent hair and spring green eyes, he crashes into my world. I thought this crazy, beautiful man could mend my bleeding heart. Make things recognizable again—normal. Instead he pulls me from the embers and feeds me to the open fire.
College life. Is this what everyone goes trough?

Amazon

Excerpt: The night was grey when the doorbell rang, and I remained in bed for a minute, gathering my thoughts. I’d dreamed about Cassiel, a sweet mix between my regular dream from Spring Hills and the visit in his apartment yesterday.

The ringing became rhythmic. One long, two short. Another long and two short ones. I threw on the clothes I’d laid out for school and stumbled off to answer.
Outside, Cassiel stood with a small smirk playing on his face. Hands buried in his coat pockets, he looked down at me, awake and ready to go.
“Mornin’,” he said. “Rise and shine!”
“What? Why?” I squinted against the parking lights from his car. “Do we have some sort of…appointment?”
As usual, Zeebs wanted in on the fun. He purred, snaking between my ankles and peering up at Cassiel. I frowned, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. We hadn’t agreed to do anything today as far as I knew, much less at such an ungodly hour. I shoved my bed hair away for a glance at my watch, but before I managed, Cassiel replied.
“In my opinion, we do. It’s already five thirty, so we got to get going if you want fresh bagels.”
“Nu-huh, oh you are so kidding me. Five thirty? Dude! I’m not even hungry.”
Amusement made his eyes shine olive-green. “Don’t worry. You will be when we get there.”
“Cassiel? Rain check. What do you know about bagels here anyway—you just moved here. Besides, I can get fresh bagels whenever I want. With a toaster!”
His laughter rang out sexy, indecently awake. “Nope, not like these. You want them fresh from the oven. With…” He bent lazily, hands still in his pockets and his nose almost touching mine, “loads of homemade, sun-dried tomato cream cheese.”
“Cassiel,” I whined, snubbing the heat unfurling in my stomach at his closeness. “I could be sleeping right now.”
He clicked his tongue, ignoring my complaint. “Where’s your jacket? It’s freezing out here. And your shoes? C’mon.”
Oh no, he didn’t. Did he? Yeah, he freaking did. “Hey!” I cried out as he carried me to his Escalade. He opened the door and dumped me on the seat.

Prologue:

Low grumbles emanated from the creatures circling me, grimly advertising their intent. The sweltering desert heat clung to me like a second skin, causing beads of sweat to trickle into my eyes. I squinted, inadvertently blurring my vision, which posed a problem given that my newly adopted life plan had just been reduced to not ending up as dog food—or whatever you would call the equivalent for wolves. “Nice wolfies . . .” I stammered, the bitter aftertaste of adrenaline lacing the back of my throat. Pointed brownstained teeth snapped at my feet as another wolf lunged closer, its acrid breath filling my airways. I gagged. “You really should have yourself checked; I’ve smelled doggy breath before, but this is taking it to a whole other level,” I ventured, trying my hand at nurturing some rapport as my eyes darted, searching for an escape route. Yellow eyes trailed my movements as drool began to accumulate in anticipation. “Eating me will not improve that smell,” I tried again, jerking my thumb at the breather. Was this really my pitch? I wouldn’t add to your dental value? “I’m not that nutritious, either! Really, I eat a lot of junk,” I lied. I didn’t actually get to do much snacking—though I would have been happy to if anyone ever bothered to send some to my dorm room. One of the wolves slunk closer, grazing my knee with his dry nose. My voice caught as I continued trying to reason with the mongrels. “I’m not all that chewable, either . . . . I’m bonier than I look.” Then I remembered how fond canines were of bones and shut up, shaking my head with disbelief at what was coming out of my mouth just in time to miss a set of snarling jaws hurtling at my throat. Being eaten by a pack of hungry mutts was definitively not the way I wanted to go.I could feel the panic crackle through me, swiftly building up inside me. I tried to regulate my breathing as my fingers itched with electricity. Deciding it was time to take what action I could, I jerked my hands forward, and a bolt of lightning erupted from my hands and into the pack. Yes, it worked! Not only had I managed not to set myself on fire, the bolt had actually landed in the general vicinity of what I’d aimed at! Most of my thunderbolt throwing thus far had been limited to uncontrolled spasms from nerves or anger, so this was quite a feat. But there was no time for an awkward victory dance. The wolves recoiled momentarily from the sudden attack, giving me the opening I had been waiting for. I lunged forward, hurtling my body toward the gap, hoping the light show would afford me enough time to reach safety. I scrambled, gathering whatever energy I had left and ran. After a few minutes of frantic chase, I perceived a discoloration in the distance. I set my sights on reaching that goal as the wolves shadowed my movements, gnashing their ravenous jaws all around me. As I gained ground, I could make out more detail in the bleak colors. The discoloration was a cave. The wolves were behind me, but I was closer. I would make it, I told myself; I had to. Hope spread, infecting my mind and expanding my lungs, blinding me.Reality, however, sank its filthy teeth into me. I yelped in agony as the pain shot through me. My legs buckled beneath me, and I collapsed into the desert sand, a hair’s breadth from snarling, snapping teeth.

Excerpt: When I opened my eyes, I noticed that I had been perched upright in a hallway across from one of the purification pods. A disembodied voice congratulated me on completing my second trial, somehow aware that I had regained consciousness. My throat went dry as my eyes searched for cameras, paranoia surging throughout my system. These people were crazy; there was no other explanation for what I had just been through.I swerved away from the pods; sure, it would be nice to be clean, but that’s how they got you— with the pristine, warm showers and scented soap. Before you knew what was going on, they would try to kill you again. In the back of my mind I wondered why they needed to clean you in between the attempts on your life, but I wasn’t about to try to understand their crazy.I just wanted out.Once I found my way out into the open air, I saw the hooded figures had reconvened. One of them was speaking, and I could hear him clearly, as if he was standing right beside me, drowning out my thoughts. “Your next testing phase will commence within the next few days.” A chill passed through me. I steeled myself. No. Nope. Not gonna happen, buddy, I decided. “The third trial is set by the coven which has shown interest in you, based on your scores, rank and lineage. If you pass, the elemental trials will follow throughout the next few months, according to the full moon . . . .” My ears buzzed as the announcer’s voice began chanting from inside my skull. My body was still shaking off the numbness in my muscles and the contrasting heat in my limbs. I had to find a way out of here. The cold air was biting, sinking into my skin, clawing at me from beneath my clothes. The announcer’s voice joined the crowd in chant, and the magic began to swell around me.

Random facts about the characters of ‘Out of Sync’

o Bree Flint’s hands have a tendency to spark electricity when she’s nervous or agitated.

o Bree’s first brush with magic came at the age of eight, when she accidentally turned her teacher into a toad. Her grandmother, Miranda, has promised the school board that such incidents won’t happen again.

o We’ve received word that Bree Flint has been dubbed ‘the girl most likely to end up in a black hole of her own making.’ Monroe School does not condone the use of such language, though we couldn’t in good conscience ask you to sit next to her during Spells class.

o Annabelle Foster, the “makeover specialist,” can work wonders with hair and make-up charms. References and testimonials can be found on her site, as well as ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures.

o Charlie Cast’s esoteric theories regarding the walking of dogs do not, as rumored, require canine participation.

o Sophia Lucas’s eye color fluctuates according to her mood. We apologize, but this feature isn’t available in potion or spell form, she was just born that way. And no, her gorgeous golden hair did not come from a bottle either, we asked.

o Reactions to Nate Harper include (but are not limited to) shortness of breath, fluctuation in heartbeat, a sudden (though fleeting) weakness in the knees, and, in one unfortunate case, footinmouth syndrome. Yes, he’s handsome; get over it.

o Lee, the vampire, is an unabashed flirt. He’s not above using his dancing abilities to recruit donors.

Review: Panic by Lauren Oliver

Title: Panic (Panic #1)
Author: Lauren Oliver
Summary: Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

Review: Stunning. Lauren Oliver's heroines all have motive to enter Panic, the life changing but life risking game played by desperate teens desperate for a chance for some big cash. Lauren Oliver moves the world of literature, and manipulates your emotions in her favour. Her story is beautifully written, and amazing. Heather is passionate and determined, Natalie depending and smart, Dodge clever and knowing. Lauren Oliver knows the choices to make, and crafts an intoxicating and unputdownable novel.

Recommended for: Fans of strong feminine heroines.

Black Beauty

Title: Black Beauty (Classic)
Author: Anna Sewell
Summary: A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next.
Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness.
Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse.
Throughout, Sewell rails - in a gentle, 19th-century way - against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all.

Review: Stunning. This is the captivating tale of a young horse that is talented and well cared for, but later has to endure life's hardships, managing to survive. Sad but brilliant, Anna Sewell captures a horse's spirit, and with your attention she gives you a beautiful tale, concluded amazingly. Intoxicating, and fabulous.

Recommended for: Fans of animals, sad but beautiful tales, slow books, and classics.

Excerpt:

When we arrive, Matt gets out and talks to the police. The officer told him the bitch and the owner is inside the house. I watched as they walk to the shed to get the pups. Just then, from the corner of my eye something black bounces in the tall grass. It is one of the pups heading towards the road. I get out and pick him up when voices from all directions catch my attention. My eyes sweep to the officer yelling with his hands up, and then I see it, the lactating female heading straight towards me. I hear Matt call out my name as I turn my back towards her and reach for the door, but it is too late. I have the yelping pup in my hands when she jumps me from behind. I don’t remember much from that point on, except hearing two shots being fired at close range, then falling to the ground with the pup clenched to my chest. The first week in the hospital is hell. They keep me on my stomach to have better access to the wounds on my back and right shoulder. The pain is immense, and I am kept under sedation for the first few nights because of the nightmares of a big black dog with red eyes standing at the edge of my bed, fangs dripping with blood. Ben and Alice visit a few times a day, and Matt comes around too, but it is clear that this wasn’t what he signed up for. I decide to break it off when I get out of the hospital, but he beats me to it. The day before I am due to be released he comes by with a mason jar of sweet tea, compliments of Jimmy, the barman at the pub where we used to hang out. He knew it was my favorite. His eyes betray him the moment he sets foot inside my room. We are history. He carefully leans over and kisses me on the forehead, then sits down on the edge of the chair, fiddling with the pocket of his pants. We talk about work, school and then, he blurts it out. I wait for the ache, but there is nothing, instead I feel relieved that I am free. I always thought that falling in love should feel like jumping from a cliff. A fall that scares you as much as it excites you, that leaves you breathless and wanting more. The impossible kind … that ruins you for everyone else. This wasn’t it, and my chances of finding it have just become harder. I am not the same girl that I was before. Finding that special guy prepared to carry my load with me, would be one in a million, a fairytale come true, and just maybe, an impossible dream…
